Massive Attack

This week I photographed Massive Attack when they played Brisbane’s River Stage for Same Same. For me, Massive Attack CD’s were on high rotation in the 90′s. I even had the Blue Lines and Mezzanine albums on tape that I thrashed in my car while hooning around the eastern suburbs of Auckland. The River Stage in Brisbane is a fantastic venue, set in the botanical gardens the stage overlooks a natural grassed amphitheatre, and the sound an visual set-up was perfect.
Founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grant Marshall (Daddy G) were joined on tour by vocalists Horace Andy, Deborah Miller and Martina Topley-Bird who performed some of my favourite tracks such as Safe From Harm, Unfinished Symphony and Teardrop. The two female vocalists sounded fantastic live.
The stage backdrop was covered in LCD panels that displayed text and images. Whilst some of the facts displayed were interesting; they were a bit distracting, and took something away form the music. The messages were also very political in nature, and whilst they were very British in their content, it was good to see some local content as well, including the line “Laura Bingle Who Bloody Cares”.
