Planning for Foodies
// March 27th, 2010 // Food, Home
Since moving to Perth Mark and I have become very organised. The reason this started is due to Perth’s lack of late-night and Sunday trading, so we were forced to be very organised with our meal planning, and do a weekly shop on Thursday evening, the only night the supermarkets are open till 9, later than the usual 6pm. We have kept this up since moving back to Brisbane.
We are both foodies, and love trying new recipes and combinations. We buy two food magazines every month- ABC Delicious (thanks for the subscription Greg) and Donna Hay, we even have a bookshelf in the kitchen stocked with magazines and cookery books. As well of this we watch several food TV programs like Poh’s Kitchen, Nigella Lawson, old episodes of the now canceled The Cook and The Chef, and Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam.
The magazines get post-it notes added, recipes from TV get written down and printed off their websites and collated. Each Saturday after our usual breakfast at Brown Dog, we come home and plan for the week. The plan is written up on the glass splashback in our fab new gourmet kitchen in red whiteboard marker.
From this we create our shopping list. Mark has a shopping list app on his iPhone and records all the ingredients we need. The app is very smart, and organises the items needed into the different shops, and even organises the items into the isles of out local supermarket. Next it’s off to the markets, delis, indian shop, asian grocery stores and supermarket to get our supplies for the week. I push the trolley, Mark flicks though is list, checking items off as we go.
It’s all very planned and organised, and always followed by a session at the gym to burn off some carbs.
