Planet Auckland

// June 6th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Photography, Travel

In 2007 I spent Easter with my family sailing in on Zinkwazi at Whangaroa Harbour at the top of the North Island in New Zealand. At the end of a fantastic trip, Greg, Doug and myself headed back to Auckland, leaving Mum and Rob on the boat. Northland is one of my favourite parts of New Zealand, and after a trip away, driving back to Auckland there is this point on the Northern Motorway where the city first becomes visible, sparking over the Waitemata Harbour, I have always loved this view of the city.

On this trip back into Auckland the sun was getting low, and casting a lovely warm light. We dropped Greg and back home, and then Doug and I head back to the North Shore to take some photos of the city basking in the warm autumn light. I tooks a series of photos which I have stitched in a massive panorama of the city. I have had this panorama sitting about, not really knowing what do do with it until I came across a picture of a tiny planet on http://thebobblog.com/ and decided to give it a go and see if I could make one (using the instructions on Photojojo), this is my first attempt, and I am quite happy with the result. The final tiny planet imag is not the tine, it is 0.5m x 0.5m, and I am going to print a large version and get it framed.

Perth Wheel

Mark and I cycled into the city with my camera and new tripod to get some pics of the new Perth Wheel on the foreshore. The bright lights of the wheel were attracting insects, and a flock of opportunistic birds were circling above having a good feed. The squiggly white lines in the images are seagulls circling above. I took these pics using bulb mode with my DSLR on a tripod and using a wireless remote to control the opening and closing of the shutter.

The Journey the Boab tree took over six days

A new road planned in the Kimberley, in North West Australia was a big threat for this tree because for 750 years it has been slowly growing in the patch of the planned road. The solution to save Gija Jumulu (The trees new name) was to move it 3200km to Kings Park in Perth. This was the longest land journey of a tree this size in history. The construction of s new bridge on the Great Northern Highway was required for the tree to be moved. The Gija people of the East Kimberley gifted Jumulu to the people of Western Australia.

Jumulu’s new home is atop the cliff face in Kings Park, overlooking the Swan River. The tree has just awoken from a dormant phase, and has sprouted new shoots. Yesterday Mark and I made a trip to say hello to the tree and take some pics.

Kings Park have also been collecting seeds from the mighty boab and nurturing them over the past six months. They are now 25 centimetres tall and ready to make their 3200 kilometre journey back to the area from which the boab came.
